Chicago Architectural Tour - Historic Downtown: Rise of the Skyscraper
Join the Penn Club for a Chicago Architectural Tour on Sunday, July 12th from 10am to noon. The tour will be led by a docent of the Chicago Architectural Society and is open to Penn alums and their guests
Come out and join fellow Penn alums and their guests on a walking tour of downtown Chicago. This event is modeled on the Chicago Archictural Foundation's popular tour "Historic Downtown: Rise of the Skyscraper". Mark Hanover will be our guide (College '90). Mark has been a certified docent for the Chicago Architectural Foundation for twelve years, and focuses on both the Historic and Modern Skyscraper walking tours. This event was organized by Allison Margolies (College '93).
Chicago is not only the birthplace of the skyscraper, it is also where most of the innovations in early skyscraper design and technology originated! Take a step back in time for an informative look at some of our world famous early skyscrapers including: Burnham and Root’s Rookery (1888) with its Moorish revival exterior and restored Frank Lloyd Wright interior; Adler and Sullivan’s Auditorium Building (1889) a masterpiece of engineering, design and acoustics; Holabird and Roche’s Marquette Building (1895) an outstanding example of the Chicago School of design; and Holabird and Root’s Chicago Board of Trade Building (1930), one of the city’s most glamorous Art Deco skyscrapers.
We will meet at the northwest corner of Michigan and Jackson and look for our tour leader who will be wearing a Penn shirt.
